These lamps stopped me in my tracks today at Target and I wish my phone pictures did their beauty justice. A little modern. A bit trad. Sort of glam. Just perfect.



They are available only in stores through the Victoria Hagan line for $49.99 each. They seriously look 10x that expensive in real life.



I think a pair would be especially gorgeous in a small master bedroom. Sparkly-sophisticated.

Lampshades

I have a thing for lamps. I love them. Almost all of mine are vintage. I get them at thrift stores or on eBay and have them rewired (if the cords look old) for just a few dollars at a lamp store. I just like the look of old lamps. But I love the look of shiny new lampshades.

One commenter recently asked for my lampshade source. I've purchased lampshades just about everywhere - Target, Walmart, JC Penney, Anthropologie, Bed Bath and Beyond, expensive lighting stores, IKEA, etc. While my purchases have mostly turned out fine, I'm always the happiest with the results of these simple drum shades from Lamps Plus.

{P.S. the height of your shade should be approx 40% of the height of your lamp base}

The simple shades above look great as is, but they look even better with some grosgrain ribbon trim along the rim(s).

(Or ball fringe (pompoms) hanging from the bottom for a kids room lamp.)

Or all lacquered up in a punchy color, like this persimmon red shade


or like Eddie's shades (P.S. He likes to use spike tape for the trim).


Try covering a basic shade with paper on the outside


or on the inside (which is especially pretty when the lamp is on and the pattern creates a silhouette).


You could also try covering the shade with fabric and ribbon.


I've been meaning to employ this technique using some vintage crewel work (from eBay)






so that I can have an Anthropologie-looking lamp shade for a fraction of the cost.You could also make appliques using fabric prints. These would be so, so cute in a kid's room.
Do you guys have any good ideas for vamping up your boring lampshades?

On a completely unrelated note, the weather today was in the negatives with the wind chill, yet we're supposed to have freakishly warm weather on Saturday and Sunday (like in the 40s!!).

So if you need to find me this weekend, I'll be outside all day - running, picnicking, spray painting, potting some plants, washing all the salt off our car, and a bunch of other outdoor activities I've been missing for the past three months!

Cheap Lamps

A good lamp can be hard to find. A great lamp under $100? Seems impossible these days, right?

I know I've blogged about this Walmart lamp before, but they started making it in peacock blue so I had to share. $30.

I love white porcelain in any form. This $50 pierced version looks nice. I love the quadrifoil pattern. Very Van Cleef. Although I would probably end up painting the cheap-looking wood base. Maybe gray. I guess it would depend on the room.

Def. not loving that shade with this base.


These two translucent lamps are only $40. This gorgeous amber tone could work in so many different rooms.

A pair of these in amythest would be an amazing color punch for a bedroom.

Classic ivory lamp. Tried and true. $50.

I think it is impossible to go wrong with alabaster marble lamps. They are perfect in every room, every decor. This pair (PAIR!!) on eBay is going for $40 right now. The auction ends in two days and the price will certainly go up, but it's worth keeping an eye on these babies.


These might have some people questioning my taste, but I think they are SO unique and completely gorgeous! I love the green and the natural woven shades. Definitely statement pieces for a room with tall ceilings (couldn't you see these gracing the pages of Domino?). $99 for the pair.

Lamp love

I have a real thing for industrial style, metal lamps. I constantly see them popping up in pictures of rooms I love. So here are some selections.

Now this first one is available in Adelaide - I have seen this actual lamp! My heart skipped a beat when I made the discovery, as I had admired it in a magazine. I had the perfect spot for it. But then I saw the price.....If you have a cool $1000 you can pop into Outdoors on Parade and it can be yours! Picture from Australian Belle.

I love this entire picture - the monochromatic scheme consisting of the black antique desk, the drawings, the lamp of course and the touch of greenery. This is picture perfection! Picture from Australian Home Beautiful.

I'm not sure where I found this picture of this little gem, but I love its gorgeous curves.

And for something a bit different, how about a black lamp? Love all the interesting bits and bobs in the bookshelf too. This whole little corner is put together beautifully.
